27. Aug 2015 Punk night at Perth's The Bird - Jaala, Doctopus + Shit Narnia

As every western Australian knows The Bird is a well-settled institution in Perth's cultural landscape. A vast variety of different types of music, art and poetry is held there.
Last Thursday we witnessed an outstanding concert that proves once again that Punk is not dead. Not in Perth, not for the people and not in the 21st century.

I don't wanna be castrated

The opening set was performed by Shit Narnia, a local Newcomer. From the first to the last tone it was pretty clear that the original spirit of punk as we might know it by respective representatives from the 70s and 80s lives on here. A very raw and angry young tune, poetic elements through storytelling and a "I don't give a shit about my guitar strings. Or anything else" attitude. Linked with a big spoonful of humor a highly succesfull start in the evening.

Hey look everybody! I'm fucking Jimi Hendrix

What's the outcome when you mix Punk, Garage and Psychedelic Rock with offensive brabbeling and a lot of hair bleaching? Exactly - A Doctopus! Locally known and chaos loving Doctopus played the second set this evening. Frontman Stephen Bellair did his best falling around and telling funny nonesense to make up a great show for the folks. A good use of stilistics different genres with an interplay of catchy melodic passages, heavy rhythms and punky tunes make those guys always a great reason to watch.

Grrl Power 2.0

A new Star is on the rise. Melbourne located girly supergroup Jaala payed a visit to beautiful WA. Little is known about the ladies that hide behind a sound what they call "experimental bedroom punk". But that's exactly what makes it even more mysterious. When it comes to their style it's a flashback to times your mom was young. Their music is huge step forwards though. Experimental dream poppy like sounds, deliberatly composed with wicked rhythms based on punky roots is what makes this formation unique. Stay tuned as they may be the next big thing!
